The remote mountain villages of gassho-style houses in Shirakawa-go on the Hida Highlands were registered as cultural heritage sites in 1995. Some of the homes are over 400 years old, making the site a national treasure which holds a special place in the heart of Japan. Afterwards, enjoy the Takayama area, with its picturesque temples, shrines, rivers and bridges reminiscent of the famed Kyoto
